I can tell that a lot of the newer team members in our company are hungry. How do I know? Because this was one of the questions asked at our most recent All Hands Meeting:
What are you looking for in the next generation of leaders?

I can tell that a lot of the newer team members in our company are hungry. How do I know? Because this was one of the questions asked at our most recent All Hands Meeting:
What are you looking for in the next generation of leaders?

Last week, our company came together for our All Hands Team Meeting. It’s nothing fancy. We all show up in the same casual attire and dedicated mindset that we do everyday.

At The Grind, we talk a lot about how important it is to surround yourself with the right people: smart people, hard workers, mentors, people who’ve done what you want to do, people who are perfecting their grind in your same field, etc. As my son Chris reminded podcast listeners recently, “You are the average of the five or six people you surround yourself with.”

For a long time, our company was a small, close-knit, family-owned and operated business—and in many ways, it still is. Yet, from April 2021 to April 2022, we added a number of new team members. Such a significant change in a relatively short amount of time can be a true test of how your team works together, and it’s what has inspired today’s letter.

This is a question I am asked frequently, especially from my team members who are relatively early in their career. And in part, this question was inspiration for creating The Grind, so I could try to distill my decades of business learning into clear actions that any of our readers could implement.

I might have gotten caught up in the spirit of the Super Bowl with my last letter, but I haven’t taken my eye off of my mission this year: to maximize the potential of every single team member on our payroll.

In my last letter, I talked about why now, more than ever, potential is what I’m about. I feel strongly about ensuring that every single person on my team feels like they are growing farther and faster than they ever thought possible.
But you might be wondering, what does that really look like?

Last week, our staff of 130 came together—in person and over Zoom—for what we call an “All Hands” meeting. Led by my two sons Chris and Brett, our CFO Jessica Stooksbury, and myself, we went over our final numbers of the year, our goals for 2022, and other company updates. We so rarely get to see our many team members all together like that, spread out as we are across so many cities and states, that these times are always special to me.
